Chain of thought is step-by-step text a language model generates to look like reasoning. It can help users follow an answer, but it is not always a faithful record of the model’s internal decision process. The visible steps may be a polished reconstruction rather than the real signals that shaped the output.
In cyber security, this matters because defenders may use LLMs for triage, analysis, or policy guidance, while attackers may try to steer responses with prompt cues or authority signals. If the rationale looks convincing, operators may trust a bad conclusion or miss prompt-injection behavior, bias, or data leakage. For high-risk use, validate outputs with tests, logs, and human review instead of relying on the explanation text alone.
