Chat records are saved messages and related conversation metadata, such as timestamps, participant names, and attachments. They may contain personal information, business discussions, credentials, travel plans, or other operational details, making them sensitive data.
In cyber security incidents, exposed chat records can reveal identities, routines, relationships, and internal processes. Attackers may use them for extortion, fraud, or targeted social engineering. Defenders should restrict access to messaging archives, encrypt stored records, set retention limits, and audit access. A claim that chat records were stolen should be verified; an allegation alone does not establish that data is authentic or that a breach occurred.
