Chatbot governance

The policies, roles, and controls used to manage a conversational AI system over time.

Chatbot governance is the set of policies, roles, approval steps, and technical controls used to manage a conversational AI system over time. It covers how the bot is designed, who can change it, what data it may access, how outputs are reviewed, and when it must escalate to a human. Good governance treats the chatbot as a managed service, not a one-time deployment.

In cyber security, governance matters because chatbots often sit between users and internal systems. Weak oversight can lead to prompt injection, accidental data disclosure, unsafe automation, or unauthorized model updates. Strong governance reduces these risks with change control, logging, access restrictions, content filters, testing, and incident response procedures. It also helps defenders prove accountability: they can show who owns the bot, how it is monitored, and how behavior drift is detected and corrected.
