CISO burnout

A deeper state of exhaustion that can reduce focus, resilience, and judgment.

CISO burnout is a deeper state of exhaustion affecting a Chief Information Security Officer, the executive responsible for security strategy and risk oversight. It is more than ordinary stress: prolonged pressure can reduce focus, resilience, and judgment, making it harder to prioritize threats, communicate clearly, and make consistent decisions.

In cyber security, burnout matters because security leadership depends on fast, careful judgment and steady coordination across teams. If a CISO is accountable for risk but lacks authority over budgets, staffing, or remediation deadlines, the role can become constant damage control. That can slow defenses, weaken escalation, and leave important controls underfunded or delayed. In real organizations, the warning signs often appear as missed follow-up, delayed approvals, poorer risk decisions, and reduced ability to challenge unsafe business demands.
