Citizen science

Scientific work that relies on participation from volunteers or non-professionals.

Citizen science is scientific work that depends on volunteers or non-professionals to collect, label, or interpret observations. In security-adjacent data pipelines, this can mean people reporting incidents, classifying images, tagging suspicious content, or contributing environmental and network observations. The value of the model is scale: many participants can create more coverage than a small expert team alone.

In cyber security, citizen science matters because crowdsourced systems can be both powerful and vulnerable. Defenders may use human-in-the-loop review, reputation scoring, and provenance checks to validate submissions and spot anomalies. Attackers, however, can try to poison datasets with false reports, spam, or coordinated manipulation to distort models and overwhelm reviewers. For that reason, good citizen-science platforms combine open participation with verification, audit trails, and clear trust controls so that volunteer input improves detection without becoming an easy attack surface.
