CJIS

The FBI framework for protecting Criminal Justice Information across participating agencies and partners.

CJIS, the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services security framework, sets baseline controls for protecting Criminal Justice Information (CJI) across agencies, contractors, and partner systems. It defines how sensitive justice data should be stored, transmitted, accessed, and audited, including expectations for encryption, authentication, logging, vulnerability management, and physically secure environments.

In cyber security, CJIS matters because CJI is a high-value target: attackers may try to steal case data, abuse remote access, or exploit weak identity controls to reach records and systems. Defensive teams use CJIS to structure controls and prove they are working, not just documented. In practice, that means mapping data flows, enforcing multi-factor authentication, scanning for vulnerabilities, and keeping evidence for reviews and audits. CJIS is both a compliance standard and an operational security model for reducing risk to justice data.
