ClamAV is an open-source antivirus engine used to scan files, email, and archives for malware. It includes a signature-based detection core and a library, libclamav, that other software can embed into mail gateways, file scanners, and security appliances. Because it is open source, ClamAV can be rebuilt, packaged, and integrated into many different products.
In cyber security, ClamAV matters because it is often part of a larger detection pipeline rather than a standalone desktop AV app. Defenders use it to inspect inbound attachments, content at rest, and downloaded archives; attackers may try to evade it by packing malware, changing file structure, or exploiting gaps between the engine version and the signature feed. When a product is repackaged around ClamAV, the brand name alone does not prove what code is running or how current its updates are. Verifying version strings, build metadata, and update provenance is essential for trust.
