CNC machinery

computer-controlled industrial equipment used in manufacturing.

CNC machinery is computer-controlled industrial equipment used to cut, shape, drill, or mill parts in manufacturing. A CNC system combines mechanical motion with software, controller logic, and machine programs, so a problem in the digital layer can affect the physical process.

In cyber security, CNC machinery matters because it sits at the boundary between IT and operations. If attackers gain access through remote management, weak credentials, or a connected engineering workstation, they may alter tool paths, halt production, damage parts, or lock operators out during extortion. Even when no sabotage occurs, a public victim claim against a manufacturer can create pressure and uncertainty around plant safety and uptime. Defenders reduce risk by segmenting industrial networks, restricting vendor access, monitoring controller changes, and keeping verified backups of machine programs and configurations.
