Collective pitch is the coordinated adjustment of every rotor blade to the same pitch angle. Increasing the angle generally increases lift across the rotor; decreasing it generally reduces lift. In a conventional helicopter, the pilot’s collective control moves the swash plate and linkages to change blade pitch together.
This differs from cyclic pitch, which changes blade pitch at different points in the rotation to tilt the rotor’s lift and steer the aircraft. Collective pitch is therefore central to controlling overall lift and altitude. Designs that replace a swash plate still need a way to produce this coordinated change. In engineering and safety assessments, the key questions include whether that control remains predictable, repeatable, and reliable throughout operation.
