Compliance risk is the chance that a practice breaks legal, regulatory, or internal obligations. In cyber security, it often appears when people handle data in ways that do not match company policy, privacy rules, retention requirements, or sector regulations. A control can be technically “working” and still create compliance risk if it sends sensitive information into an unapproved system or stores it longer than allowed.
Shadow AI is a common example: an employee pastes confidential, personal, or regulated data into an external chatbot without approval. That can expose the organization to policy violations, audit findings, contractual breaches, and regulatory penalties, even if no attacker is involved. Defenders reduce this risk with clear AI-use rules, data classification, approved tools, logging, retention controls, and training that tells staff what may never be shared.
