A configuration archive is a saved copy of a device’s settings, often used for backup, recovery, or transferring configurations. It may contain more than routine settings: credentials, cryptographic keys, certificates, network details, and trust relationships can also be included.
In cyber security, exposure of an archive can give attackers information or secrets that help them impersonate trusted systems, access managed devices, or plan further attacks. For example, an archive taken from a network management platform may reveal settings for many firewalls, but its exposure alone does not prove those devices were compromised. Defenders should restrict access to archives, encrypt them, protect the keys separately, minimize stored secrets, and review access and export logs.
