Configuration-dependent risk

Exposure that changes based on which modules, features, or directives are enabled.

Configuration-dependent risk is exposure that changes depending on which modules, features, or directives are enabled in a system. The same software version can present very different security properties if one deployment activates a parser, reverse-proxy rule, authentication module, or custom extension while another leaves it disabled.

This matters because attackers do not exploit software in the abstract; they target the parts that are actually reachable. A bug in an optional module may be harmless on one server and critical on another that loads it in production. Defenders therefore need inventory and configuration awareness, not just version tracking. In practice, this means reviewing active features, comparing running directives to hardened baselines, and patching or disabling exposed components before they become part of the attack surface.
