Connection key

A credential used to authenticate a remote management channel between services or devices.

A connection key is a credential that authenticates a remote management channel between services or devices. Unlike a password used only to sign in to one account, it may authorize a management system to send commands to connected systems. Its permissions and reach therefore determine how much access it can provide.

In cyber security, an exposed or stolen connection key can let an attacker misuse a trusted control channel, potentially changing settings or installing unauthorized software on managed devices or sites. Defenders should restrict key access, store keys securely, rotate or revoke them when exposure is suspected, and review connected systems for changes made before revocation. Removing a key does not necessarily undo actions already taken.
