Consent control

The mechanism that tracks and enforces user permission for data use.

A consent control is a technical mechanism for recording and enforcing a person’s permission for specific uses of their data. It can include consent prompts, stored preference settings, and rules that limit which systems or partners may access data for an approved purpose.

In cyber security, reliable consent controls help prevent data from being shared or reused beyond what a user authorized, and provide evidence of what was approved and when. They should be connected to access controls and data-flow policies, not treated as a one-time interface choice. In practice, organizations use them to govern app permissions and third-party integrations; defenders also review consent records and audit logs to find outdated permissions or data flows that no longer match user choices.
