Containment authority

The permission to take immediate defensive action, such as isolation or blocking.

Containment authority is the permission for a defender, or a managed security provider, to take immediate protective action when a threat is confirmed or strongly suspected. Typical actions include isolating an endpoint, blocking a process, disabling an account, revoking a session, or pushing a network block without waiting for manual approval.

In cyber security, this matters because speed is often the difference between a contained incident and a wider breach. Modern intrusions can spread quickly through credential abuse, persistence, and lateral movement, so detection alone is not enough. A service may identify malicious activity accurately, but if it lacks containment authority, it may only be able to notify the customer and wait. In contrast, pre-approved authority lets defenders trigger playbook steps immediately through endpoint, identity, or network controls. Good incident response planning defines exactly who can act, what actions are allowed, and under what conditions.
