Contextual advertising is an ad-targeting method that matches a message to the content, keywords, or situation around it. In a chat, webpage, or app, the system uses surrounding context to decide which ad to show, rather than relying only on broad audience profiles. This can improve relevance, but it also means the advertising system must process more of the user’s current content and intent.
In cyber security, contextual advertising matters because the same relevance signal can be abused. Attackers may place malicious or deceptive ads next to trusted-looking content, use context to make phishing prompts feel timely, or exploit ad networks to deliver malware through malvertising. Defenders watch for suspicious sponsored content, validate ad sources, and enforce filtering, sandboxing, and privacy controls around contextual signals. For businesses, the key question is whether the ad is only relevant-or also exposing users to risk.
