Converged network

A shared infrastructure that carries multiple services such as Wi-Fi, operations, and digital media.

A converged network is a shared infrastructure that carries multiple kinds of traffic, such as Wi-Fi, operations, voice, point-of-sale, and digital media, over the same underlying systems. Instead of separate networks for each service, one architecture supports many business functions.

In cyber security, converged networks matter because they concentrate value and risk. If an attacker compromises one weak service, such as guest Wi-Fi or an exposed management portal, that foothold can sometimes be used to reach payment systems, staff tools, or signage controllers. Defenders reduce this risk with network segmentation, strong authentication, least-privilege access, monitoring, and failover design. In venues and campuses, a converged network can improve efficiency and speed, but it also means uptime, trust, and containment must be planned together.
