CPE

A naming scheme that helps map vulnerabilities to specific products and versions.

CPE, or Common Platform Enumeration, is a standardized naming scheme for identifying products and versions in vulnerability data. A CPE name can describe a vendor, product, and release line, such as a specific operating system, browser, or server component. This consistency helps security tools talk about the same software in the same way.

CPE matters because vulnerability databases, scanners, and patch platforms use it to map CVEs to affected assets. If the CPE is accurate, defenders can automate exposure checks, prioritize fixes, and reduce false matches. If it is missing or wrong, a vulnerable product may be overlooked or the wrong system may be flagged. In practice, CPE appears in NVD records, asset inventories, and scanner results, where it supports both detection and remediation workflows.
