Credential activity is the pattern of logins and authentication events tied to a user account. Security teams watch for it because unusual behavior can show that stolen passwords, reused credentials, or weak access controls are being abused. Examples include logins from new locations, impossible travel, repeated failed attempts, unusual device fingerprints, or access at odd hours.
In real attacks, credential activity often appears early: an intruder tests leaked passwords, uses automation to try many accounts, or logs in with valid credentials before escalating access. Defenders use these signals to detect account takeover, enforce multi-factor authentication, trigger alerts, and block suspicious sessions. Reviewing credential activity is also useful during extortion investigations, because it helps separate public claims from evidence inside the environment.
