Credentialing fraud is the use of forged IDs, badges, certificates, screenshots, or other credentials to make a false claim look legitimate. Attackers use it to pose as employees, contractors, security staff, or verified accounts, then gain trust, bypass checks, or pressure victims into sharing data or sending money.
In cyber security, credentialing fraud supports phishing, social engineering, and account takeover by reducing suspicion. It can also help intruders enter offices, enroll in helpdesk workflows, or convince targets to approve password resets. Defenders counter it with independent verification, strong identity proofing, MFA, tamper-resistant badges, and training that treats urgent requests with “official-looking” evidence as suspicious.
