Credibility signal

a feature or design choice that helps users judge whether content feels authentic and reliable.

A credibility signal is a feature or design choice that helps people assess whether content, an account, or an interaction is authentic and reliable. Examples include verified identity indicators, visible moderation policies, clear labels for automated or AI-generated material, and a history of consistent, accountable participation.

In cyber security, credibility signals matter because attackers exploit trust through impersonation, deceptive content, and automated activity designed to look human. Signals can help users and platforms spot suspicious behavior, but they are not proof: badges can be forged or misused, and convincing content can still be false. Use them alongside independent checks, such as confirming an account through a trusted channel and scrutinizing unusual requests. Platforms can strengthen trust by making signals difficult to fake and explaining what they do-and do not-verify.
