Cross-disciplinary skills

Complementary abilities from different fields that help turn technical work into usable decisions.

Cross-disciplinary skills are abilities drawn from different fields that help people connect specialized knowledge to practical decisions. In cyber security, these can include communication, critical thinking, business awareness, legal or compliance knowledge, and understanding how users work, alongside technical expertise.

They matter because security decisions affect systems, operations, people, and organizational risk. During an AI security review, for example, an engineer may identify a technical weakness while a colleague with governance or domain knowledge helps assess its impact and turn it into a control or decision. These skills support threat modeling, incident response, procurement, and AI governance by helping teams explain risks across disciplines. They complement-not replace-clear technical ownership and specialist competence.
