Crosstool-Ng

A tool for building cross-toolchains for non-native target architectures.

Crosstool-Ng is a build tool for creating cross-toolchains: compiler, linker, C library, and related utilities that run on one machine but generate code for a different target CPU or operating system. It is commonly used when building software for embedded devices such as MIPS-based controllers, routers, or appliances.

In cyber security, cross-toolchains matter because defenders often need to rebuild patched binaries, custom utilities, or recovery tools for hardware that cannot use desktop packages directly. When the correct toolchain is missing, updates may be delayed, features may be omitted, and vulnerable software can linger on exposed devices. Attackers also benefit from this gap by targeting environments where software is hard to rebuild or verify. Crosstool-Ng helps reduce that risk by making reproducible, target-specific builds more practical, especially when matching the device’s architecture and runtime libraries is essential for reliable deployment.
