Curve seed

A starting value used in the process of deriving a public elliptic-curve parameter set.

A curve seed is a starting value used when deriving public parameters for an elliptic curve. Those parameters define the curve used by cryptographic systems, such as ones that create or verify digital signatures. The seed is generally public and is distinct from a user's private key.

Seeds matter because their origin can affect confidence that a curve’s parameters were chosen transparently and without hidden weaknesses. In an attack analysis, researchers may examine a seed’s pattern or reproduce its generation to understand how public parameters were created; that alone does not show the curve is broken or reveal private keys. Defenders should use cryptographically secure randomness for secret keys and rely on well-documented, vetted public parameters.
