Customer Advances

Payments received before delivery, recorded as a liability until earned.

Customer advances are payments a customer sends before goods or services are delivered. In accounting, the seller records the money as a liability, not revenue, until the obligation is fulfilled. Once delivery occurs, the advance is recognized as earned revenue.

In cyber security and fraud analysis, customer advances matter because they affect cash-flow timing and can hide operational risk. Attackers and fraudsters may exploit advance-payment workflows through invoice fraud, business email compromise, fake suppliers, or manipulated prepayment records. Defenders look for unusual advance-payment requests, mismatches between payments and shipment status, and unexpected changes in customer funding patterns. Large advances can be normal in hardware, cloud, or custom manufacturing deals, but they also deserve scrutiny because they may signal concentration risk, collection pressure, or artificial demand support.
