Customer design files are engineering documents or digital assets created for, received from, or used to support a customer’s products. They may include drawings, CAD models, specifications, test results, and manufacturing details. These files can reveal proprietary designs, production methods, or product plans.
In a cyber incident, unauthorized access or disclosure can expose trade secrets and create commercial, contractual, or regulatory consequences. Attackers may steal such files for extortion, competitive advantage, or to make phishing more convincing. Defenders should identify where customer designs are stored, restrict access to authorized roles, protect transfers and backups, and monitor for unusual access or bulk downloads. A breach claim alone does not prove that files were accessed or published; organizations need to verify the affected data through investigation.
