CWE-648

A weakness category for incorrect use of privileged APIs that can lead to unauthorized access.

CWE-648 describes a weakness where privileged APIs are used incorrectly, allowing a caller to reach functions that should be restricted. An API is “privileged” when it can change security settings, manage users, read sensitive data, or perform other administrative actions. If the code fails to enforce the right authorization checks, an attacker may skip normal controls and trigger those functions directly.

This matters because API-level mistakes often bypass the protections that front-end login screens or role-based menus appear to provide. In real attacks, defenders may see unauthorized requests to management endpoints, hidden administrative routes, or calls made with insufficiently validated credentials. The fix is to treat every privileged API as a trust boundary: authenticate every request, verify authorization server-side, minimize exposed functions, and log access for review. In short, CWE-648 is about preventing powerful interfaces from becoming shortcuts to unauthorized access.
