A cyber-physical event is an incident where a physical action affects digital systems, causing disruption to services, networks, or devices. The trigger may be a strike, fire, vandalism, power loss, equipment damage, or tampering with cables, cooling, or control hardware. Unlike a purely software attack, the root cause is in the physical world, but the impact is digital: outages, degraded connectivity, failed authentication, or unavailable applications.
This matters in cyber security because availability depends on more than code and logs. Operators need redundancy, alternate routing, backup power, offsite recovery, and tested failover procedures to survive loss of a site or a critical component. In real attacks and defenses, cyber-physical events can resemble cyber intrusions because users see slowdowns or service loss first. Careful incident analysis is needed to separate physical damage from malware, and resilience planning must assume both can happen at once.
