Cyber-risk assessment

A structured review of threats, vulnerabilities, and likely business impact.

A cyber-risk assessment is a structured review of the threats, vulnerabilities, and business impacts affecting an organization’s systems and data. It combines technical findings, such as exposed services, weak authentication, unpatched software, and third-party dependencies, with operational questions like which services are critical and how long they can be unavailable.

This matters because security teams cannot defend everything at once. A good assessment helps prioritize controls, spending, and response plans based on what is most likely to be attacked and what would hurt the business most. In real attacks, the same weaknesses identified in an assessment may be used for phishing, ransomware, account takeover, or supply-chain compromise. In defense, the assessment informs patching, monitoring, segmentation, backup strategy, and business continuity planning. Regulators also use it to check whether a firm can show not just that it has controls, but that it understands and manages its cyber exposure.
