Cyber Risk Quantification (CRQ)

A method for expressing cyber exposure in financial terms.

Cyber Risk Quantification (CRQ) is the process of estimating cyber exposure in financial terms, such as potential loss from a breach or disruption. Rather than relying only on labels like “high” or “medium,” CRQ uses data, models, and stated assumptions to help compare risks and support decisions about security spending, remediation, or risk transfer.

In practice, CRQ may use structured loss-analysis methods, insurance-oriented models, security telemetry, or external ratings. These approaches are not interchangeable, and results depend on the quality and freshness of their inputs. In attacks and defenses, CRQ can help organizations prioritize weaknesses by estimated financial impact, but incomplete inventories, stale control data, or opaque assumptions can make estimates misleading. Treat the resulting figures as decision aids-not precise predictions-and document the model’s purpose, assumptions, and update cycle.
