Cybercriminal group

A loosely organized set of actors suspected of profit-driven or disruptive attacks.

A cybercriminal group is a loosely organized set of actors who collaborate on hacking for profit, disruption, or both. The label does not always mean a formal company-style structure; many such groups are fluid, with members specializing in access, malware, phishing, extortion, or laundering stolen funds.

This term matters because defenders often face repeated activity from the same threat set, even when individual members change identities or roles. In real attacks, a group may reuse infrastructure, credentials, or tactics across many targets, making pattern recognition more valuable than chasing a single account name. Security teams look for shared indicators such as unusual logins, web-facing exploitation, privilege abuse, and coordinated phishing. Effective defense depends on logging, account monitoring, threat intelligence, and rapid response to stop one intrusion from becoming a wider campaign.
