A cybersecurity incident is any event that disrupts, degrades, or threatens digital systems, data, or operations. It can range from suspicious access to a full outage that stops business functions such as order processing, shipping, or authentication. Not every incident is a confirmed breach, but every incident signals that normal security or availability controls have been affected.
In real attacks, incidents may involve malware, stolen credentials, ransomware, misconfiguration, or a failure in a third-party service. Defenders treat incidents seriously because the impact is often operational first and forensic second: systems may be unavailable before the root cause is known. Response usually includes containment, log review, recovery from backups, and business continuity planning to keep essential services running while the issue is investigated.
