Data precision is the degree to which information is accurate, detailed, and up to date. Precise data describes the real-world situation closely enough to support dependable decisions. It is distinct from simply having a large amount of data: records can be extensive but outdated, incomplete, or misleading.
In cyber security, precision matters when teams use asset inventories, threat intelligence, or access logs to identify risks and respond to incidents. Stale records may cause defenders to overlook exposed systems or investigate false alarms. Attackers can also exploit inaccurate inventories or outdated information to find gaps in security. Maintaining data precision requires validation, regular updates, consistent formats, and clear responsibility for corrections. Shared systems and APIs are useful only when the information they exchange remains trustworthy and current.
