Data remanence

Residual information that remains on storage after deletion or reallocation and may still be recoverable.

Data remanence is residual information that remains on storage after deletion, formatting, or reallocation and may still be recoverable. It happens because deleting a file often removes only the pointer to the data, not the bytes themselves, until they are overwritten.

In cyber security, data remanence matters because it can expose sensitive records in reused disks, virtual machines, containers, backups, or decommissioned devices. Attackers may recover stale blocks, filesystem fragments, database pages, or memory images if sanitization is weak. Defenders reduce this risk with block zeroing, secure erase, cryptographic erasure, full-disk encryption, and strict storage lifecycle controls. In multi-tenant cloud systems, remanence is especially important because one customer’s leftovers must never be readable by the next.
