Deadline pressure

a tactic that narrows response time to increase urgency.

Deadline pressure is a coercive tactic that gives the target very little time to respond. In cyber extortion, attackers set a short window for payment, contact, or negotiation so the victim feels forced to act before confirming facts or consulting legal, technical, and communications teams.

This matters because urgency can be as effective as technical compromise. A threatening message may mention stolen data, reputational harm, or publication dates to narrow decision-making time and increase compliance. Defenders should treat the deadline as part of the attack, not proof of a breach. The best response is to verify the claim, preserve evidence, and coordinate internal messaging before replying, so the attacker does not control the pace of the investigation.
