A deceptive recovery offer is a false promise of help made to victims after a cyberattack, usually to persuade them to pay money. In ransomware cases, an attacker or impostor may claim it can decrypt files, restore systems, or delete stolen data. The goal is not recovery, but another round of extortion or payment diversion.
This tactic matters because it exploits urgency and confusion during an incident. Victims who believe recovery is imminent may share sensitive details, delay trusted incident response, or pay an unverified third party. In practice, these offers can come through emails, chat messages, or fake “specialist” services that present themselves as intermediaries. Defenders should verify all recovery contacts through approved channels, involve legal and incident response teams, and treat unsolicited rescue claims as suspicious until independently confirmed.
