Defensive verification

the process of confirming whether an alleged incident is real, scoped, and still active.

Defensive verification is the process of checking whether an alleged cyber incident is genuine, what systems or data it affects, and whether malicious activity is ongoing. It separates evidence-backed findings from claims, such as a ransomware group’s public victim listing, which may not by itself prove a breach.

Security teams verify claims by reviewing relevant logs, account activity, endpoint alerts, network traffic, and indicators of data access or exfiltration. They also assess the incident’s scope and check whether systems remain exposed or compromised. This helps guide containment and recovery while avoiding premature conclusions. In practice, verification should be prompt and evidence-led: a claim merits investigation, but its accuracy and impact must be established independently.
