Degraded service means a system is still running, but one or more functions work poorly, slowly, or only partially. Users may be able to sign in, send mail, or open files while search, syncing, reporting, or other features fail. In cloud platforms, this can make a service look “up” even though important workflows are impaired.
In cyber security, degraded service matters because availability problems can block investigations, delay response, and hide evidence. Attackers may trigger degradation with denial-of-service traffic, resource exhaustion, or by disrupting a dependency such as DNS, indexing, or authentication. Defenders also watch for degraded service during maintenance or incident response, because partial outages can signal that a backend component is failing even when the main interface still responds. Planning for degraded operation means having alternate ways to find data, verify activity, and continue critical tasks.
