Digital labor

The use of AI or automation to perform tasks that would otherwise be done by people.

Digital labor is work performed by software, automation, or AI instead of a human operator. In security teams, it can include alert triage, log parsing, phishing detection, ticket routing, patch orchestration, and other repetitive tasks that machines can do faster and at larger scale than people.

In cyber security, digital labor matters because it changes both defense and attack economics. Defenders use it to cut response time, reduce manual workload, and handle high-volume telemetry. Attackers use it to automate reconnaissance, credential stuffing, spam, lure generation, and malware operations, letting a small team act like a much larger one. The main risk is overtrust: automated systems can misclassify events, miss novel threats, or amplify bad data. Good practice is to pair digital labor with human oversight, clear approval rules, and monitoring so automation supports security rather than bypassing it.
