Digital service

an online function delivered to users, such as a portal, workflow, or citizen interface.

A digital service is an online function delivered to users, such as a public portal, a workflow, an authentication screen, a payment page, or a citizen-facing interface. In cyber security, the term matters because the service is often the point where people, data, and backend systems meet. If the service is weakly designed or poorly maintained, attackers may exploit it to steal credentials, trigger fraud, expose personal data, or disrupt access.

Digital services appear in both attacks and defenses. Attackers target them with phishing, credential stuffing, injection flaws, broken access control, or denial-of-service traffic. Defenders protect them by mapping dependencies, patching underlying platforms, enforcing strong authentication, logging activity, and testing availability and access controls. For public bodies and businesses alike, knowing which digital services exist, who owns them, and what systems they rely on is essential for incident response, continuity planning, and risk reduction.
