Direct costs

Expenses that can be tied immediately to the AI system, such as development or infrastructure.

Direct costs are expenses that can be traced immediately to a specific system, project, or control. In an AI or security program, they include items like cloud compute, storage, development time, licensing, and dedicated infrastructure. Because they are easy to attribute, direct costs are the first layer of any realistic cost model.

In cyber security, direct costs matter because they help teams measure the true price of protection or automation. A defender can compare the direct cost of running detection models, retaining logs, or deploying endpoint tools against the result they produce, such as fewer incidents or faster response. Attackers also manage direct costs: servers, domains, malware kits, and other infrastructure all consume resources and can limit scale. Clear direct-cost tracking makes it easier to spot waste, justify controls, and compare one use case with another on the same economic basis.
