Direct-to-device (D2D)

A satellite connectivity model that links ordinary smartphones to space-based networks without special terminals.

Direct-to-device (D2D) is a satellite connectivity model that lets ordinary smartphones connect to a space-based network without a special terminal or dish. In practice, the handset still relies on carrier integration, licensed spectrum, and standards-based authentication, but the radio path can extend beyond terrestrial cell towers.

In cybersecurity, D2D matters because it adds new trust boundaries and more points where traffic can fail or be manipulated: the phone, satellite link, gateway, carrier core, and emergency-routing systems. Defenders must verify identity, protect signaling, and test degraded-mode behavior so calls, messages, and location data remain accurate under outage conditions. Attackers may try to spoof service, exploit misconfigured routing, overload gateways, or abuse weak handoff logic during emergencies. D2D is therefore not just a coverage upgrade; it is a control-plane problem that must be secured end to end.
