Discount effect

the short-term lift in interest created by a promotional price.

The discount effect is the short-term rise in interest, sign-ups, or sales created by a promotional price. It matters because the lift often reflects the offer, not the underlying value of the product. In cyber security and adjacent digital services, this can distort adoption metrics: a tool, subscription, or bundle may look successful during the promotion, then lose momentum once the normal price returns.

Defenders and analysts watch for the discount effect when judging whether customers, users, or even fraud victims are responding to convenience or simply to a temporary bargain. In attacks, criminals may copy this pattern with “limited-time” deals, fake renewals, or low-cost trials to push people into fast decisions. The key test is retention after the promotion ends, because durable demand is a better signal of real utility than a brief spike caused by price cuts.
