Drosophila melanogaster

The common fruit fly used widely in biological research.

Drosophila melanogaster is the common fruit fly and one of the most widely used model organisms in biology. In cyber security, it matters because research data about D. melanogaster often sits inside digital lab environments, alongside sequencing files, analysis scripts, shared storage, and cloud-based notebooks.

Those systems can be targeted by ransomware, credential theft, or supply-chain compromise, which may corrupt sample metadata, change analysis outputs, or expose unpublished results. Defenders protect these environments with access control, backups, integrity checks, signed or versioned pipelines, and provenance tracking so scientists can verify that data and results have not been altered. The organism itself is biological, but the security problem is digital: keeping research data accurate, available, and trustworthy.
