DWG is a file format used for technical and design drawings, especially in computer-aided design (CAD) work. It is common in engineering, architecture, construction, manufacturing, and facility planning, where drawings may include floor plans, schematics, part layouts, and annotations.
In cybersecurity, DWG files matter because they often contain sensitive operational details that are valuable to attackers: building layouts, equipment placement, infrastructure plans, and proprietary design data. If an adversary steals DWG files, they may gain insight into physical security, critical assets, or intellectual property. In extortion cases, attackers sometimes list DWG files to signal access to valuable engineering records and increase pressure on the target.
