E.164

The international numbering format used for telephone numbers in global networks.

E.164 is the international telephone numbering standard used across global networks. It defines a phone number format with a country code and subscriber number, usually written with a leading plus sign, such as +44 or +1. This standardized form lets systems compare, store, and route numbers consistently across carriers, apps, and countries.

In cyber security, E.164 matters because phone numbers are often used as trust anchors for messaging, account recovery, call routing, and identity discovery. Attackers may abuse weak number handling to redirect calls, spoof identities, or manipulate lookup systems that translate E.164 numbers into routing data, such as ENUM-based DNS records. Defenders rely on strict validation, canonical formatting, and careful control of number-to-service mapping to reduce fraud and misrouting. In short, E.164 is not just telecom syntax; it is part of the trust layer that decides where a call, message, or verification step actually goes.
