An ecosystem distributed is a model in which people, services, and data are spread across multiple connected environments instead of staying inside one closed network. In cyber security, this matters because the trust boundary becomes wider and harder to see: a user may move between internal systems, partner platforms, cloud apps, and third-party tools, each with different controls and risks.
Distributed ecosystems often create identity sprawl, duplicated accounts, unclear permissions, and data flows that are difficult to track. Attackers can exploit the weakest link through phishing, stolen credentials, misconfigured sharing, or compromised vendors. Defenders reduce risk by applying least privilege, strong identity management, regular access reviews, data classification, logging, and clear rules for which services may handle sensitive information. In practice, a distributed ecosystem is not unsafe by default, but it needs centralized oversight to keep visibility, accountability, and trust under control.
