EHR scans are image files or scanned documents stored in an electronic health record system. They can include referrals, consent forms, lab reports, prescriptions, ID documents, and handwritten clinical notes. Because these files are often scanned in bulk, they may be less structured than database fields but still contain highly sensitive medical information.
In cyber security, EHR scans matter because they are valuable for extortion, fraud, and identity theft. A ransomware group may claim large numbers of EHR scans to suggest broad exposure, even before the full breach is verified. Defenders should protect these files with strong access controls, encryption at rest, logging, and data classification. Limiting who can export or sync scans, and separating scan repositories from other critical systems, reduces the impact if attackers gain access.
