Emergency Response Plan (ERP)

A documented plan for responding to incidents and restoring critical operations quickly and safely.

An Emergency Response Plan (ERP) is a documented set of actions for handling an incident, limiting damage, and restoring essential services safely. In cyber security, an ERP helps teams respond to ransomware, system outages, unauthorized access, or operational technology failures without improvising under pressure. It usually defines roles, escalation paths, communication steps, backup procedures, manual workarounds, and recovery priorities for critical systems.

ERPs matter because fast, coordinated action reduces downtime and safety risk. In environments like water utilities, a cyber incident may affect pumps, monitoring, or remote access before anyone knows the full cause. A good ERP tells operators who can isolate systems, how to keep service running in degraded mode, when to notify regulators or customers, and how to restore trusted backups. Defenders use ERPs alongside drills and tabletop exercises so staff can execute the plan quickly when a real attack or disruption occurs.
