Employee records

personal HR data that can increase fraud and privacy risk.

Employee records are personal HR files about workers, such as names, contact details, addresses, payroll data, tax forms, ID numbers, benefit information, and employment history. In a cyber incident, these records matter because they can expose sensitive personal data even when the core business systems are not fully compromised.

Attackers target employee records for fraud, identity theft, phishing, and extortion. A leak can help them impersonate staff, reset accounts with stolen details, or pressure a company by threatening privacy harm. Defenders treat these records as high-value data: they should be classified, access-controlled, logged, encrypted where possible, and separated from general file shares. In an incident, teams should verify what was actually exposed, preserve logs, and assess whether employee notifications, password resets, or identity-protection steps are needed.
